Puttu kadala curry is a very delicious and popular breakfast prepared in Kerala. Whenever we go into Kerala to the Temples there, and get to have breakfast we had always like to have puttu kadala curry. It will be available in every small and big restaurants in there.

Black chickpeas is a good source of proteins and vitamins. It is full of nutrition and helps in clearing the digestive system. Low in fat and high in dietary fiber helps in weight loss. How about a breakfast with a black chickpea flour and an authentic steamed rice puttu.

Very filling and energetic morning breakfast option. This can be had for dinner as well!

Ingredients
Puttu rice flour – 2 cups
Salt

For curry 
Black chickpeas – 100 grams

For dry masala
Fennel seeds -1 tsp
Coriander seeds – 3 tsp
Jeera – 1 tsp
Dry red Chili – 3
Pepper – 1/2 tsp
Cinnamon – 1/2 inch
Clove – 2

For wet masala
Shallots – 15
Tomato – 1
Garlic – 5 cloves

 
Methods 

For puttu sprinkle water (room temperatrrure) in the flour and crumble with the hand slowly, add water little at a time. The consistency should be able to hold the flour in the palm. Now grate some fresh coconut and keep it aside.

Now in the puttu maker layer the coconut and puttu flour, take some water in pressure cooker and keep the puttu maker on it to steam cook for about 10mins. Hot, soft and fluffy puttu is ready! Can be had with sugar (and banana) or kadala curry!

For the curry
Wash and soak the black chickpeas over night. Add required quantity of water and allow it to pressure cook for 10 to 15 whistles .

Dry roast all the ingredients for the dry masala, allow it to cool and finely powder them in the mixer grinder. Heat some oil and fry the shallots, tomato and garlic until they are slightly browned. Allow it to cool and grind to a fine paste along with the dry masala. Add water to get the desired consistency.

Heat oil in the cooker and add the mustard seeds, once they splutter add in the curry leaves. To this add the ground masala, the cooked black chickpeas is added and mixed well along with the water used for cooking.

Now add salt and allow it to cook for another 3 whistles. Delicious kadala curry is ready to be served! Kadala curry goes good with steamed rice, dosa, idly, poori and chapatti.
