For dhal

Now add required quantity of water to cook the dhal. Allow it to cook for 5 to 6 whistles. Once the pressure is fully released take the water from the dhal into a container.

Now add coriander seeds, cumin seeds, dry red Chilli, tomatoes cut in halves and around 10 shallots. Now add water and salt and leave it for another 5 whistles. Once it is cooked, now again take the water and pour it to the already taken dhal water. Leave about 1/2 tomatoes in the dhal and keep the remaining for the rasam.

Mix the dhal and allow it to cool. Take the dhal in a mixer and give it a good whip and make it a coarse or smooth paste as you like. In a tadka pan heat some oil, add mustard seeds and curry leaves and add this to the dhal.

For rasam

Make a paste of the tomatoes and soak the tamarind to extract the juice. In a Kadai heat some oil and add asetofotida, 1/2 tsp cumin seeds, garlic cloves and the remaining shallots. Saute for about 3 mins until the shallots and garlic slightly change in colour. Now add in the tomatoe paste, saute for a min and then pour in the filtered tamarind extract.
