Horsegram is a legume which is grown and used mostly in south India. They are used in Ayurvedic and siddha cuisine for their medicinal properties. Health benefits of Horsegram are innumerable. They are good for obese people and people suffering from cold and other health problems. Horsegram is used to prepare delicious dhal and rasam, can even make a simple soup to enjoy the benefits of this legume.

Let’s make the dhal and rasam!

Serves – 3

Horsegram – 1 cup
Shallots – 15 + 10
Dry red Chilli – 2
Jeera – 1+1/2 tsp
Coriander seeds – 2 tsp
Tomatoes – 2
Tamarind – lemon size
Garlic cloves – 10
Rasam powder – 1tsp
Pepper powder – 1tsp
Asetofetida- small piece


For dhal

Clean the Horsegram for some small sticks or stone and wash them throughly. Take the Horsegram in a pressure cooker and dry roast till nice aroma comes out. Now add required quantity of water to cook the dhal. Allow it to cook for 5 to 6 whistles. Once the pressure is fully released take the water from the dhal into a container.

Now add coriander seeds, cumin seeds, dry red Chilli, tomatoes cut in halves and around 10 shallots. Now add water and salt and leave it for another 5 whistles. Once it is cooked, now again take the water and pour it to the already taken dhal water. Leave about 1/2 tomatoes in the dhal and keep the remaining for the rasam.

Mix the dhal and allow it to cool. Take the dhal in a mixer and give it a good whip and make it a coarse or smooth paste as you like. In a tadka pan heat some oil, add mustard seeds and curry leaves and add this to the dhal.

For rasam

Make a paste of the tomatoes and soak the tamarind to extract the juice. In a Kadai heat some oil and add asetofotida, 1/2 tsp cumin seeds, garlic cloves and the remaining shallots. Saute for about 3 mins until the shallots and garlic slightly change in colour. Now add in the tomatoe paste, saute for a min and then pour in the filtered tamarind extract.

Add in the rasam powder, pepper powder and salt and give it a good stir. Allow it to come to a boil. Tasty kollu rasam is ready.

Delicious kollu dhal and rasam can be had with papads.
