Sakkarai Pongal is the most commonly prepared neivedhyam / prasadam or festive food recipe not only at homes in south India but also in the Temples. It is a very simple and healthy way of having a sweet. If we use millets to prepare this dish it becomes even more nutritious. Millets are full of nutrients that body needs. Let’s use samai rice or the little millet which is high in Fiber, rich in vitamins and minerals.

Ingredients
Samai arisi – 1 cup
Moong dal – 1/4 cup
Jaggery – 3/4 cup
Brown sugar – 2 tbsp
Ghee –1/4 cup
Cardamom – 2
Cashews –5
Raisins – 8

 
Method

Wash the Samai rice and moong dal and soak them for 10 mins. Pressure cook in a medium heat for 2 to 3 whistles. Once it is done slightly mash them when it is hot.

In a sauce pan take some water and add jaggery and crushed cardamom. Allow the jaggery to melt and when it comes to a boil strain and add this to the rice and dal. Now add sugar and required quantity of ghee and mix well.

In a tadka pan heat some ghee and fry the raisins until they swell to tiny balloons, remove them and fry the cashews until they are golden brown.  By now the aroma in the kitchen will give a good festive mood.
