Snacks are small amounts of food we eat in between meals. These snacks can be bought from a shelf in the supermarket, from a sweet / savoury shop. Not snacking will also make us eat a lot of the main meal. For those of us who are a little health conscious, making your own snacks at home is the best way to keep watch on the calories and ingredients.
Here are a few tasty healthy (fresh, raw or steamed) snacks which can be made at home and will help us in weight loss yet satisfying our mid-meal cravings.
1. Steamed / boiled corns
Corn is rich in Fiber, it is a good source of beta carotene. The folate in corn prevents anemia. Corn is nutritious and has antioxidant properties. It is one such vegetable which can be cooked and had even without any seasoning. Hence corn can be a very good snack that helps weight loss.
2. Cooked peanuts
Boiled peanuts are relatively low in calories when compared to the roasted peanuts. Peanuts are good source of flavonoids and polyphenols, the antioxidants thus prevent the cells from any damage. Boiled peanuts are very common healthy and delicious snack.
3. Steamed nendram banana
Banana is nutritious, contains vitamin C, potassium and fiber. Banana gives us the energy and fills the stomach, it is the most commonly used fruit. Nendram banana is most used or preferred variety in traditional Ayurveda. Sautéed banana with a pinch of cinnamon, sugar, ghee is one of the Ayurvedic breakfast recipes.
4. Masala pori
This is a healthy snack as it is not deep fried like most of the other snacks. Masala pori can be made very quickly with no much preparation. It is very crispy and can be enjoyed as a tea time snack. It can be stored in a container for 3 to 4 days .
5. Pumpkin purée
Pumpkin purée is not just for kids. It tastes yummy with just some salt and pepper added to it once cooked. Pumpkin is an excellent source of vitamin A. It keeps the eyes, bones and teeth healthy. It is very low in calories and helps us with weight loss. Pumpkin contains good amount of fiber and zinc. It is beneficial for skin health as it helps to protect and cleanse the skin.
6. Sweet / savoury kozhukattai
Kozhukattai is an authentic Indian snack made of rice flour. It is made using the steaming method and is not fried in oil, thus making it a healthy snack. It is a good appetiser and helps weight loss. The sweet variety of this snack is made healthier by adding coconut and jaggery to give the taste and flavour. Kolakattai can be made using millets instead of rice flour making them a good choice of healthy snack.
Carrots are one of those vegetables which tastes great just like that. The beta carotene in carrots are good for eyes. Carrots are delicious either cooked or raw and becomes the best snack or can be used in any meal of the day.
8. Bowl of berries
All the beautiful berries are packed with nutrients. Blueberries are an excellent source of manganese which helps bone development and converts carbohydrates and fats into energy. Strawberries are rich in nutrients, vitamin C, folic acid and contains antioxidants. Blackberries are low in calories and rich in antioxidants. Raspberries contain high levels of ellegic acid that stops the growth and elimination of cancer cells. The oil from raspberry provides sun protection and also protects the ageing skin.
9. Sweet potatoes
Boiled or steamed sweet potatoes contain vitamin C, vitamin D and vitamin B6. High in dietary fiber and low in calories, help us feel full for longer and help us in losing weight. Though they are sweet they do not cause the blood sugar spikes. They are rich in manganese and beta carotene.
Apples lower the cholesterol and keep you full and slim. Apples help in the development of healthy body in young children. Apples are juicy and delicious with loads of health benefits for people of all ages. It improves the overall health of an individual. Apple as a snack can be easily carried and had at any time of the day.
