In a weekend afternoon when the vegetable tray is empty with only few onions and staples at home. This one pot rice dish ‘arsi Paruppu Sadham’ can be quickly made.
Toor dal is a staple in most of the Indian household, it is very delicious and can be prepared in many different ways. Toor dal contains fiber and are an excellent source of nutrients and plant protein.
Split Bengal gram has Low GI and is good for diabetes. The soya chunks are made from soy beans and is a protein and carbohydrate packed vegan alternative to meat.
Rice – 3/4 cup
Toor dal- 3 tablespoon
Split Bengal gram- 1 tablespoon
Onion – 1
Dry red Chilli – 1
Biryani masala / sambar masala – 2 tsp
Chilli powder –1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Soya chunks (cook them in boiling water for few mins and squeeze out the excess water before adding) – 20 nos (small)
Cinnamon – 1 inch
Cloves – 3 to 4
Fennel seeds – 1/4 tsp
In a cup take 3/4 of rice and the remaining 1/4 should be toor dal (3 tablespoon) and split Bengal gram (1 tablespoon). Wash all the ingredients and soak them in water with rice and dal separately, as the dal soaked longer is better.
In a pressure cooker take some oil, add the cinnamon, clove, fennel seeds once the aroma comes out add in dry red Chilli and onions. Saute them for a while until the onion is transparent.
Now add the rice and dal and mix it well, so that the dal and rice are evenly spread, to this add the turmeric powder, chilli powder, biryani masala/sambar powder. Pour water as required (like we use for daily cooking), now soya chunks are added and finally add salt and mix.
A quick one pot rice is ready…….this can be enjoyed with Pappad, raw small onions (finely chopped), pickle or even yogurt.
