Green gram is a high source of protein which is about 14 grams per cup and 15 grams of Fiber. They are rich in phytonutrients and antioxidant. These legumes are used in Ayurveda for their cleansing properties. It is a super food for vegetarians and helps weight loss.

One cup of cooked green moong beans has about 212 calories

Green moong dal – 1 cup
Small onion (Shallots) – 7
Green Chilli – 2 
Coriander powder or whole coriander – 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
Tomato – 1/2


Take the whole moong dal and wash it thoroughly.

Add the dal to pressure cooker and fry it dry for a while until nice aroma comes. Now add required quantity of water and allow it to pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles.

From the cooked dal take some dal water and keep it aside to make the rasam.

In the cooker add some more water just enough to cover the dal now include the other ingredients small onion,green chilli,coriander seeds(or powder) and the cumin seeds and tomato. Add salt to taste.

Let the dal cook for 2 to 3 whistles. The dal is ready, can be mashed with a wooden masher or be given a whip in the mixer grinder.

The tadka can be given with some asofetida, curry leaves and mustard. The green moong dal can be had with rice, adding a tsp of ghee will give nice aroma and flavour to this rice and dal combination.
